Why Therapists and Musicians Should Consider Launching a Nonprofit for Their Programs

Many music therapists, teachers and musicians are already doing mission-driven work — they just don’t realize it qualifies as nonprofit-worthy. This article breaks down the key reasons to consider forming a nonprofit along with your for-profit, to unlock grant funding and partnerships and build a legacy of impact through music.

As a music therapist, educator, and nonprofit leader, I’ve often found myself in conversations with musicians and creative therapists who dream of launching programs that serve their communities but struggle with how to sustain them. The truth is, many of these initiatives belong not in the margins of someone’s side hustle but at the heart of a well-structured nonprofit.

If you’re a musician, teacher or music therapist with a passion for community impact or social justice, here’s why forming a nonprofit might be your next most strategic — and impactful — move.

1. Your Program Is Already a Mission in Action

Whether you're offering songwriting workshops for youth, music therapy sessions in schools, or community drum circles, chances are your work already aligns with a public good and community impact. That’s the heart of a nonprofit: doing work that benefits others, not shareholders. When you formalize this mission into a nonprofit, you can build infrastructure to support and scale it.

2. You Can Access the Vast World of Grant Funding

Unlike for-profit businesses, nonprofit organizations can apply for government and foundation grants, receive tax-deductible donations from individuals, secure sponsorships from organizations, benefit from free or reduced-cost services, and even take advantage of pro bono services and volunteering opportunities. That can mean real capital to grow your vision, not just relying on your personal funds or sales cycle to generate revenue.

3. Collaborations and Legitimacy Open Up

Achieving 501(c)(3) nonprofit status unlocks new partnerships. Schools, hospitals, community centers, and philanthropic organizations often prefer — or require — a nonprofit status to collaborate or disburse funds. It’s not just a tax classification; it’s a signal that your work is community-centered, accountable, and sustainable. Even if you have a thriving for-profit business, establishing a nonprofit component to your work can open up a world of possibilities.

4. You Build a Legacy Beyond Yourself

A nonprofit can grow beyond your individual role and extend your impact far into the future. With a board of directors, staff, volunteers, and funders, your music program can become a platform that supports not only your vision, but also the careers and creativity of many others. It provides structure, sustainability, and the opportunity to build something bigger than yourself.

5. You Can Still Pay Yourself Fairly

Contrary to popular belief, nonprofit doesn’t mean unpaid. It simply means that no individual profits from the organization's surplus. At the end of the year, any remaining funds aren’t distributed to shareholders or owners—they stay within the organization to advance the mission or build operating reserves. Founders, staff, and service providers can earn fair wages and build thriving careers within the nonprofit model. The key is transparency and responsible budgeting—something most music therapists and musicians already understand from managing program budgets or their own finances.

A Note of Encouragement

Starting a nonprofit may sound daunting, but you don’t have to do it alone. There are tried-and-true practices that have been time-tested and proven successful. There are advisors, fiscal sponsors, and consultants (like me!) who specialize in helping music-based programs become compliant, impactful, and sustainable. If your calling is to bring healing, empowerment, or education through music, you deserve a structure that supports your vision long-term and brings together a group of people who also share a passion for contributing to the world in this way.
